MDE+MDJH Open Chess Tournament

Sunday January 16th, 2005

 

Venue:

MacDonald Drive Junior School, Macdonald Drive, St. John’s.

Registration:

9:15 AM to 9:45 AM. (Sharp)

Lunch:

No formal lunch break.  Canteen service available (hot dogs etc.)

Finish Time:

Approximately 3:00 PM.

Format:

5 rounds Swiss pairing (30 min. per player per game).

Entry Fee:

$10.00 per player

 

The tournament will be open to all grades (K-12).  There will be the following sections:

·        Section 1: Kindergarten to Grade 2

·        Section 2: Grade 3 and Grade 4

·        Section 3: Grade 5 and Grade 6

·        Section 4: Grade 7 to Grade 12

 

The top three players in each grade up to Grade 6, will receive medals.  The top player(s) in Section 4 (grade 7 to grade 12) will receive monetary prizes.  (Details of monetary prizes  will depend on attendance).  There will also be the following special awards:

 

  • Certificate - Best Performance per section – rated player
  • Certificate - Best Performance per section – unrated player
  • Medal - Best Performance for MDE player (combined K-6 sections) – rated
  • Medal - Best Performance for MDE player (combined K-6 sections) – unrated
  • Medal - Best Performance for MDJ player (7-12 section) – rated
  • Medal - Best Performance for MDJ player (7-12 section) – unrated

 

Late comers will receive zero point byes for the rounds missed.  Up to two ½ point byes are available, if requested in advance ,for rounds 1, 2, 3 and 4 only.  Tie break games will be 15 minutes per player.  If, tiebreak games are drawn, then 5 minute speed chess games will be used to break the ties.   Finalist pins will be awarded to players engaged in tie-break games.  NLSCA tournament rules will apply.  Tournament director will be Mr. Bob Gregory.

 

Important Note to Parents:

All tournament participants must be supervised by a parent or designated guardian.  Neither the Newfoundland and Labrador School Chess Association (NLSCA) nor Macdonald Drive Junior High School will be held responsible for the safety or behaviour of participants not actively engaged in tournament play.  The responsibility of the tournament organizers will be limited to ensuring fair competition in accordance with NLSCA tournament rules.  (See http://www.chess.nl.ca for more information).
